When the new shape Land Rover Range Rover Evoque arrived in 2019 it caused quite a storm – so much so that by now, almost a million have been sold since its launch in 2011.
The stunning and striking Evoque
The new Evoque is a stunner, partly because the old one was already an excellent SUV but also because Land Rover clearly put a lot of effort into the upgrade.
The sloping roof and rising waistline on the Evoque are still there but it has been accentuated through clever use of metal creasing and scooping plus elegant placing of the grill and vents. The result is that the Evoque looks even more animal-like – leopard-like in its poise and sultry smooth new skin accentuated by the new narrow headlights.
The Evoque is firmly a medium sized SUV. Normally that means some form of compromising in that the Evoque would lack the presence of a big SUV but also lose out on practicality in the city. This isn’t the case here however as the Evoque manages to straddle the fine line between practicality and road presence very well…in short, its big enough for most but still very agile and practical as an all round family vehicle.
The Evoque also benefits from the hard work put into the Velar and many of the new parts come from its even more upmarket brother.
Let’s take a look as some of the kit on the Evoque
From a safety point of view the new Evoque has you covered.
Not all safety features are standard across the model range but you can expect your new Evoque to have Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control with traction control, seatbelt pre-tensioners, front parking sensors and rear camera plus 7 airbags of all descriptions. The rear camera is particularly clever where the “ClearSight” interior rearview mirror allows the rearview to be projected onto the rearview mirror – why don’t all manufactures do this ?!
Use of Technology is very much to the fore. One of the most noticeable features are the two 10” touch screens which Land Rover call “The Touch Pro Duo” where you use the top screen to navigate and the bottom screen to sort your multi media and the perfect climate bubble to drive in. The Touch Pro Duo boast 2 x 10” touch screens allow you to multitask whilst you drive, using the top screen for the likes of navigation while the bottom screen takes care of media or climate control. The top screen is super defined and the Nav pops off the screen which is ideally placed so you can still focus on the road and anything coming your way.
It is almost like Land Rover took some criticism of the all round visibility on the old Evoque model and decided to go camera crazy so no one could complain any more. There is even an optional “ClearSight Ground View” camera allowing you to see “through” the chassis and see the ground that your front wheels are about to tackle – useful if you like to go off-road.
Off road
Speaking of off-road, that’s not what the Evoque is best suited to though with Land Rovers heritage you know that you can more than handle the odd boggy field or icy January road and the Evoque can tow up to 2 Tons which its diesel engines handle with ease.
The Engines
There are 3 Diesel engines and 3 petrol engines. The Evoque Diesels start at 150 horse power, moving up to 180hp and the exhilarating 240hp twin turbo. If you prefer petrol then you can opt for a 200hp, a 249hp or a rocket ship like 300hp squeezed into the medium sized Evoque. They all have 4 wheel drive apart from the 150hp diesel.
Trims
There are 3 trims in the form of, the Evoque, the R-Dynamic and the First Edition. We like the copper touches on the R-Dynamic while the Special Edition benefits from state of the art LED headlights, a panoramic roof and some extra snazzy detailing.
The Iconic Evoque
Land Rover now refer to the Evoque as the “Iconic Evoque” and we think that the new Evoque has earned that badge.
